Description of key information

The 72 hr EC50 of sulfolane to Selenestrum capriconutum was 500 mg/L and the NOEC was 171 mg/L. These values are based upon the area under the growth curve, the most sensitive endpoint monitored.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
500 mg/L

Additional information

A proprietary study (Kurume (1999)) was selected as key study for this endpoint. In this 72 -hour test the freshwater algaeSelenastrum capricornutumwas exposed to a series of sulfolane concentrations of up to 1000 mg/L. Based on area under the growth curve at 72 hours the EC50 was determined to be 500 mg/L and the NOEC was determined to be 171 mg/L. The study was conducted according to GLP in accordance with the standard guideline OECD 201 and so was considered reliable and acceptable for assessment of this endpoint.
