Description of key information

In a GLP study conducted according to OECD guideline 209, a 3-hr NOEC of 4820 mg/L (highest tested concentration) was determined for DEIPA in a respiratory inhibition test with municipal activated sludge (Gonsoir and Manor, 1999).

In a GLP study conducted according to OECD guideline 209, the potential for DEIPA to inhibit the respiration of activated sludge was assessed. The effect of DEIPA was evaluated by measuring the respiratory rate of activated sludge fed with synthetic sewage in the presence of the test solution at nominal concentrations of 300, 600, 1205, 2410 and 4820 mg/L. The test conditions were validated with the use of a reference substance (3,5-dichlorophenol) and negative controls (no test substance). Following 3 hours of aeration, the dissolved oxygen concentration of each reaction mixture was measured over a period of up to 10 minutes. The respiratory rate (mg O2/L/hr) was subsequently calculated and presented as a percentage of the mean of the two negative control respiration rates. A 3-hr NOEC of 4820 mg/L was determined as no respiratory inhibition was observed at any concentration (Gonsoir and Manor, 1999).

In summarising this study, NICNAS (2009) concluded that DEIPA was not acutely harmful to sludge microorganisms.

In addition, in the ready biodegradability test, duplicate toxicity control reactions containing a mixture of benzoate and DEIPA showed no evidence

of inhibition of the test material to the activated sludge organisms (Goodwin, 1999).
