Description of key information

The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriate low concentrations.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

To assess the toxicity of diethylamine (CAS 109 -89 -7) towards microorganisms, a non-GLP short-term respiration test (BASF AG, 1990, report no.: 01.89/0742) was performed according to ISO 8192. As inoculum, domestic activated sludge was used. A 30 -min EC10 of > 1000 mg/L was determined.

Additionally, a growth inhibition test with Pseudomonas putida was conducted according to DIN 38412 part 8. Diethylamine causes a shift in pH value, therefore, the two highest test concentrations (125 and 1000 mg/L) were additionally tested with pH-adjustment. An 17 -h EC10 of 35 mg/L was determined for non-neutralised test solutions (BASF AG, 1989, report no.: 9/1890742). For the two neutralised test solutions, no inhibition in growth could be observed (17 -h EC10 > 1000 mg/L).

In conclusion, the inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when diethylamine is introduced in appropriate low concentrations.
