Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

There are no long-term toxicity to fish studies available for the PFAE linear category. However, available short term studies in fish, invertebrates and algae and long-term studies with invertebrates all indicate no potential for aquatic toxicity for the members of the PFAE linear category, with the exception of two “water soluble” ester with Adipic acid (C6) as dicarboxylic acid component and short chain alcohols, exhibiting toxic or harmful effects (CAS 105-99-7, Dibutyl adipate and CAS 6938-94-9, Diisopropyl adipate). Furthermore, due to their ready biodegradability it is not likely that aquatic organisms are exposed to the test substances since they will be ultimately degraded in sewage treatment plants. In addition, the ECHA Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, Chapter R.7b (ECHA, 2012b) states that “chronic fish toxicity testing is generally only necessary, when the P and B criteria are fulfilled” and this is clearly not the case. Hence due to animal welfare reasons and to avoid unnecessary vertebrate tests, no further long-term test with fish is required for any member of the PFAE linear category.
