Description of key information

Parent compound valeryl chloride: No data.

Hydrolysis product valeric acid: An inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when the substance is introduced in appropriate low concentrations.

Hydrolysis product HCl: No data.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for microorganisms:
189 mg/L

Additional information

Parent compound valeryl chloride:

No data are available for valeryl chloride (CAS 638 -29 -9). The substance rapidly decomposes in water and forms HCl (CAS 7647 -01 -0) and valeric acid (CAS 109 -52 -4). Therefore, the toxicity to microorganisms is assessed on the basis of data on valeric acid.

Hydrolysis product valeric acid: Growth inhibitory effects on the ciliate Tetrahymena pyriformis were investigated following the method of Schultz (1997). The 40 -h EC50 was 189 mg/L (Schultz et al., 2002).

Based on the result above, the inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when the substance is introduced in appropriately low concentrations.
