Description of key information

The acute toxicity of cyclohexylamine to fish was tested according to OECD TG 204. Using un-buffered media, after 14 days an EC50 of 19 mg/L was observed (MITI, 1997).

Additional information

The present test was conducted with and without pH adjustment, whereas pH values significantly increased (up to a pH of 9.8) with increasing test item concentrations in cases where un-buffered media was used. Concluding, it is assumed that observed effects are exclusively caused by the prevailing pH values. Supportive, acute toxicity tests conducted in buffered observed no adverse effects at a test item concentration of 100 mg/L.

The present study was thus used in the scope of environmental risk assessment as it shows that the pH is the crucial factor determining adverse effects towards aquatic life rather than the presence of the test item itself. Concluding, there is no risk of underestimating the environmental hazard using that study and environmental hazards of the test item towards aquatic life are adequately assessed.
