Description of key information

The short-term toxicity to the aquatic environment of the registered substance 4,4'-Isopropylidenediphenol, propoxylated (BPA PO) was investigated using reliable studies on the substance and BPA 2PO, which is one of the main constituents of BPA PO.

Short-term toxicity studies on aquatic species indicated that BPA 2PO was more toxic to the aquatic environment than BPA PO. This suggests that the toxicity to the aquatic environment of the constituents of the registered substance decreases when their degree of propoxylation increases.

Therefore results from testing on BPA 2PO were used for the assessment of the aquatic toxicity of the registered substance as they represent a worst-case scenario.

 

 

Testing indicated that aquatic invertebrates was the most sensitive species with a 48-hour EC50 of 2.3 mg/L, obtained from a GLP-compliant short-term toxicity study performed on Daphnia magna according to the OECD Testing Guideline 202.

Considering that the 48-hour EC50 for aquatic invertebrates is above 1 mg/L, the registered substance does not meet the criteria for classification as acute toxic to the aquatic environment in accordance with Regulation (EC) N°1272/2008.

 

There is no available data on the chronic toxicity of the registered substance to the aquatic environment.

The Chemical Safety Assessment conducted according to Annex I of REACH did not indicate a need to investigate further the effects to the aquatic environment. Therefore no long-term toxicity testing on aquatic species was performed in accordance with Annex IX, Column 2, of REACH.

Considering that the 48-hour EC50 for aquatic invertebrates of is comprised between 1 and 10 mg/L and the substance is not rapidly biodegradable, the registered substance meets the criteria for classification as Aquatic Chronic 2; H411.

 

The toxicity to STP microorganisms was assessed using data on BPA 2PO. The study gave a 3-hour EC50 > 100 mg/L based on respiration inhibition. These results do not impact on the classification of the registered substance.
