Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria
Administrative data
Link to relevant study record(s)
Description of key information
No acute or chronic effects to algae are expected up to the limit of water solubility (< 0.41 mg/L)
Key value for chemical safety assessment
Additional information
Three studies investigating the toxicity of Fatty acids, C18-unsaturated, dimers (CAS No. 61788-89-4), Fatty acids, C16-18 and C18-unsaturated, branched and linear (CAS-No. 68955-98-6), and Fatty acids, C18-unsaturated, trimers (CAS No. 68937-90-6) to aquatic algae were used as read across to Fatty acids, C16-18 and C18-unsaturated, dimerised (CAS No 71808-39-4), “Crude dimer”, in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, Annex XI, 1.5, grouping of substance and read across approach. No study is available for the test substance itself.
The aquatic toxicity to green algae, Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata (formerly Selenastrum capricornutum), of Fatty acids, C18-unsaturated, dimers (CAS No. 61788-89-4) was tested with WAFs under static conditions (Kelly, 2002). The WAFs were prepared through direct addition of test substance to the medium and stirred for 48h. Thereafter 800 mL of the WAF was siphoned off for use as test medium. The EL50 (72 h) and NOELR (72 h) were both determined as > 1000 mg/L (nominal). A further study with Fatty acids, C18-unsaturated, trimers (CAS No. 68937-90-6) conducted under static conditions and using the marine alga Skeletonema costatum also recorded no toxicity at the tested WAF loading rates (EL50 and NOELR > 1000 mg/L), concluding that no effects occurred up to the limit of water solubility of the tested substance (< 0.37 mg/L) (Källqvist 2004). Finally, a static algal growth inhibition limit test with the freshwater algae Desmodesmus subspicatus according to OECD 201 with Fatty acids, C16-18 and C18-unsaturated, branched and linear (CAS No. 68955-98-6) showed that there were also no effects up to the limit of the water solubility (NOELR (72 h) ≥ 1000 mg/L nominal) (Sewell, 1994).
Thus, based on the above mentioned results and due to structural similarities of the tested category members, it can be concluded that Fatty acids, C16-18 and C18-unsaturated, dimerized (CAS No 71808-39-4) or any other substance within the sub-category 2 does not show any chronic toxicity to algae up to the limit of water solubility.
