Sodium ethyl xanthate (SEX) is classified as Aquatic Acute Cat 1; M-factor 1, and Aquatic Chronic Cat 1 ; M-factor 1 (H410) based on the available acute and chronic toxicity data on three trophic levels of organisms. The following key values were obtained for CSA.: Data on short-term toxicity The 24 -h EC50 (immobilisation) to Daphnia magna is 0.35 mg/L based on measured concentrations under static conditions (OECD 202). The 96 -hour LC50 (mortality) to Salmo gairdnerii (new name: Oncorhyncus mykiss) is 0.12-0.19 mg/L based on measured concentrations in a flow-through system. The 72-h EC50 (growth rate) to Desmodesmus subspicatus is 10.51 mg/L based on nominal concentrations under static conditions (OECD 201, GLP) with a read-across substance potassium isoamyl xanthate (PIAX). Data on long-term toxicity The 21-d EC10 (reproduction) to Daphnia magna is 0.047 mg/L based on measured concentrations under semi-static conditions (OECD 211). The 28-d LC25 (mortality) to Salmo gairdnerii (new name: Oncorhyncus mykiss) is < 0.03 mg/L in a flow-through system. The 72-h NOEC (growth rate) to Desmodesmus subspicatus is 1 mg/L based on nominal concentrations under static conditions (OECD 201, GLP) with a read-across substance potassium isoamyl xanthate (PIAX).
