Acute tests on two trophic levels were performed to examine the aquatic toxicity of 2-(octylthio)ethanol. For the trophic level involving algae, the acute toxicity was estimated using a QSAR model. Daphnia magna turned out to be the most sensitive species, with a 48-hour EC50 of 0.38 mg/L. Fish and algae turned out to be less sensitive providing a 96 -hour LC50 of 2.7-2.9 mg/L and an EC50 value of 5.33 mg/L, respectively. Thus, 2 –(octylthio)ethanol is considered acutely very toxic for aquatic organisms.
