Biodegradation in water: screening tests

Additional information

The inherent biodegradability of the test substance was determined in a guideline study according to OECD 302B (BASF AG 1985). In this study the TOC removal after 28 days was measured to be 0 %. Furthermore, a BOD5 study in which no oxygen consumption was measurable substantiates that the test item is not readily biodegradable (BASF AG 1985). Due to these results a GLP enhanced biodegradation test according to OECD 301B was perfomred using non-adapted acitvated sludge as inoculum (BASF 2012) in order to clarify whether the substance fulfills the persistence criteria or not. After 60 days of prolonged exposure no biodegradation was measured related to inorganic carbon analysis based on carbon dioxide evolution.

Hence, the substance is considered to be poorly biodegradable and also poorly eliminable in the environment. Therefore the substance is assumed to be persistent.
