Executive summary:

The purpose of this study was the determination of the flammability (solids) of the test item according to the consolidated version of Council Directive 67/548/EEC Annex V (Council Directive 92/69/EEC), Part A: Methods for the determination of physico-chemical properties, A.10. Flammability (solids). The study was performed in accordance with the Principles of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and reported with a valid GLP certificate.

 

The test item in its commercial form was loosely filled into a mould. The mould is made of metal, has a length of 250 mm and a triangular cross section with an inner height of 10 mm and an inner width of 20 mm. On both sides of the mould in a longitudinal direction two metal sheets are mounted as lateral limitations which project 2 mm beyond the upper edge of the triangular cross section. The mould was then dropped three times from a height of 2cm onto a solid surface. If necessary the mould was then filled up again. Then the lateral limitations were removed and the excess substance was scraped off. A non-combustible and non-porous plate was placed on top of the mould, the apparatus was inverted and the mould was removed.

As ignition source a flame was used to ignite the pile at one end.

Preliminary test: One end of the pile was ignited. When the pile burned over a distance of 200 mm during 4 minutes, the main test has to be performed. If there was no ignition of the test item after 2 minutes of contact with the flame or the pile burned slower than 200 mm during 4 minutes, the main test is unnecessary.
