Key result
Surface tension:
ca. 64.38 mN/m
Temp.:
20 °C
Conc.:
90 other: % saturation in water

The surface tension decreased during the first measurements and was constant afterwards. The mean value was therefore calculated from the determinations obtained 3 hours after the preparation and later. The age of the surface was 3 h to 4 h 15 min.

Conclusions:
The surface tension of the "Kalkstickstoff" (calcium cyanamide, technical grade) was 64.38 mN/m, standard deviation 0.173, at a temperature of 20.0°C.
Executive summary:

The surface tension of "Kalkstickstoff" (calcium cyanamide, technical grade) was determined with the OECD ring method with an interfacial tensiometer. The surface tension is determined by measurement of the maximum force (exerted vertically) necessary to separate a ring being in contact with the surface of an aqueous solution of the test substance.

Calcium cyanamide technical grade does not solve in water but transform to cyanamide and further more consist of at least one constituent that remains unchanged solid. According to the guidelines the surface tension was therefore determined with a solution of 90 % saturation in water.

The surface tension of the "Kalkstickstoff" (calcium cyanamide, technical grade) was 64.38 mN/m, standard deviation 0.173, at a temperature of 20.0°C.

Additional information

The surface tension of Calcium cyanamide, technical grade (Kalkstickstoff) was determined with the OECD ring method with an interfacial tensiometer. The surface tension is determined by measurement of the maximum force (exerted vertically) necessary to separate a ring being in contact with the surface of an aqueous solution of the test substance.

The water solubility of the main component calcium cyanamide is 29.4 g/L, but due to the component graphite the "whole test substance" is not soluble in water in a concentration of 1 g/L at 20°C. According to the guidelines the surface tension was therefore determined with a solution of 90 % saturation in water.

The surface tension of the Calcium cyanamide, technical grade (Kalkstickstoff) was 64.38 mN/m, standard deviation 0.173, at a temperature of 20.0 °C.
