There is a high probability that the test substance is acutely not harmful to aquatic invertebrates.

The acute toxicity of (2 -hydroxylethyl)ammonium nitrate was examined in a GLP guideline study according to OECD 202 with the test species Daphnia magna [BASF AG 2000]. The organisms were exposed to the test substance for 48 hours in a static test system set-up. The stability of the test concentrations over the test period was confirmed by concentration control analytics. At test termination an EC50 of > 100 mg/L (nominal) was determined.

Additionally, supporting guideline studies with the test substance compound 2-aminoethanol (CAS 141-43-5) are available which were conducted using Daphnia magna as test organism as well [Huels AG 1997, NITE 1996 and Union Carbide Corporation 1988].

At the end of the exposure period the retrieved EC50 values ranged from 32.6 to 97 mg/L.

Several studies with invertebrates are available from toxicity testing with sodium nitrate, all showing very high EC50 values. In a reliable OECD 202 guideline study with Daphnia magna, the 24 hour EC50 was determined to be 6280 mg/L (nominal concentration relating to nitrate) [BASF AG 1983]. Anderson et al. derived an EC50 of 2612 mg/L nitrate after 48 h from toxicity testing with sodium nitrate and the test species Daphnia magna. A supporting study of Schuytema and Nebeker with Pseudacris regilla resulted in a LC50 of 7749 mg/L (measured) nitrate after 96 h. Epifanio and Srna's acute toxicity test system with the two saltwater molluscs Crassostrea virginica and Mercenaria mercenaria resulted in a LC50 of 15810 mg/L nitrate after an exposure period of 96 hours.
