Description of key information

Considering the high reactivity of zirconium tetrachloride with water or moisture and its fast hydrolysis, it may only be present in the gastrointestinal tract, respiratory tract, or on the skin for a limited period of time.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Bioaccumulation potential:
no bioaccumulation potential

Additional information

Zirconium tetrachloride, in contact with water or when moistened or in contact with moist skin or mucuous membranes, is quasi-instantaneously completely degraded in ZrOCl2 and hydrogen chloride. Moreover, ZrOCl2 is also unstable in contact with water and decompoes into ZrO2 (no hazardous substance) and HCl.

Considering this high reactivity, zirconium tetrachloride may only be present in the gastrointestinal tract, respiratory tract, or on the skin for a limited period of time. Hence, toxicokinetic predictions based on the characteristics of zirconium tetrachloride are of limited relevance.
