Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Particle size distribution is not possible to determine as ZrCl4 reacts instantly with water vapour to form zirconium dichloride oxide and hydrogen chloride . However, a French thesis and an in house study (Areva CEZUS, Jarrie) give a distribution range of the particle size of ZrCl4 between 40 and 80 µm

Additional information

Testing is technically not possible as ZrCl4 reacts instantenously with water vapor to form zirconium dichloride oxide and hydrogen chloride. Moreover, the powder spontaneously crumbles (sublimation) and makes impossible the determination of particle size. However, A french Thesis (B.BEDEN, 1974) reports a sieving with AFNOR mesh and locate the range distribution between 40 and 80 µm.

This result is consistent with an in house study (Areva CEZUS, Jarrie) where ZrCl4 was pulverised in anhydrous fluid and particle size distribution was determined by laser detection: DM 50 = 60-70μm. However, this parameter is not relevant for ZrCl4 used in normal conditions in non-closed atmosphere, as it reacts immediatly with water content in the air.
