Additional information

The short-term soil macroorganism toxicity testing has been carried out with the submission substance. Results from a 14-day earthworm study (OECD 207 study guidelines) show that submission substance does not cause any toxicity at the highest soil concentrations tested (1000 mg/kg nominal) (Key Lab, 2010). The 14-day LL50 and 14-day NOEL values were greater than 1000 mg/kg soil dw with no mortality or adverse effects observed.  

 

Similar 14-day earthworm toxicity studies with a structurally related alkylated naphthalene material (i.e., Synesstic 5, aka reaction products of 1- hexadecene and naphthalene)(ExxonMobil Biomedical Sci. 2009) also indicate no mortality to earthworms.  Synesstic 5 did not cause any mortality to earthworms at the highest tested loading at 1000 mg/kg in soil.  The 14-day LL50 and 14-day NOEL were both greater than 1000 mg/kg soil (nominal loadings).   

 

Collectively, these findings indicate that the submission substance and related alkylated naphthalene surrogates are not acutely toxic to earthworms under the conditions of the OECD 207 test.
