Description of key information

The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when the substance is introduced in appropriate low concentrations.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The data on toxicity to microorganisms are based on results obtained for 3,7-dimethyl-3-ol, since no data for 3,7-dimethyl-1-ol are available. The respiration rate of microorganisms in presence of 3,7-dimethyl-3-ol was tested by a test conducted in compliance with German standard, DIN  38412, part 27 focused on the respiration of the species Pseudomonas putida. By measuring the oxygen consumption of P. putida for 30 minutes an EC50 of 1000 mg/l was determined (BASF AG, 1989).
