Additional information

Data on the ready biodegradability of 2,2-bis[[(1-oxoheptyl)oxy]methyl]propane-1,3-diyl bisheptanoate (CAS 25811-35-2) are not available. Therefore, in accordance to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5, data on the ready biodegradability of the structurally related substances pentaerythritol tetraesters of n-decanoic, n-heptanoic, n-octanoic and n-valeric acids (CAS 68424-31-7) and fatty acids, C16-18 and C18-unsatd., tetraesters with pentaerythritol (CAS 68604-44-4) is used as read-across. This read-across is justified in detail in the overall summary (IUCLID section 6.1) and within the analogue justification in IUCLID Section 13.
The biodegradability of pentaerythritol tetraesters of n-decanoic, n-heptanoic, n-octanoic and n-valeric acids (CAS 68424-31-7) was tested in a study conducted according to OECD guideline 301B (Häner, 2006). Activated sludge was exposed to the test substance for 28 days. The biodegradation rate was determined by measuring the CO2 evolution. After 28 days, the test substance reached a degradation rate of 96%. In a second study following OECD guideline 301B conducted with pentaerythritol tetraesters of n-decanoic, n-heptanoic, n-octanoic and n-valeric acids (CAS 68424-31-7) a biodegradation rate of 78% was determined after 28 days (Muckle, 2009). Therefore the substance was regarded as readily biodegradable according to the OECD criteria. In a third study the biodegradability of fatty acids, C16-18 and C18-unsatd., tetraesters with pentaerythritol (CAS 68604-44-4) was tested according to OECD guideline 301B (Häner, 2007). The substance was degraded by 76% after 28 days and thus regarded as readily biodegradable according to the OECD criteria.
Thus, based on the available studies from structurally related read-across substances (in accordance to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5) which are characterized by an equal ecotoxicological profile and a similar structure, it can be concluded that 2,2-bis[[(1-oxoheptyl)oxy]methyl]propane-1,3-diyl bisheptanoate (CAS 25811-35-2) is readily biodegradable according to the OECD criteria.
