A mesocosm study testing the effects of tetramethylthiuram disulfide in water/sediment systems was conducted by Memmert (2000). 5000 liter ponds were prepared with water and natural sediment and inoculated with indigenous species (rotifers, daphnids, etc). Four applications with the test formulation were distributed over 7 days for 1 month, followed by a post-observation period of 8-12 weeks. The most sensitive organisms turned out to be rotifer communities, in which significant population density reductions could be observed. However, this effect was reversed within 2-5 weeks post-treatment as the density of the total population of rotifers reached similar levels to those found at test initiation. Additionally, an in-door microcosms study in order to reduce the possible uncertainties derived from the previous mesocosm study was performed (Hommen, 2008). No long-term effects on rotifers or gastropoda were found, and short-term effects occurring in other few taxa were a result of increased abundances.
