Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Lactide is rapidly hydrolysed to lactic acid. Lactic acid is the readily biodegradable and is not hazardous to sediment organisms.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

According to REACH Annex X, point 9.5.1, long-term toxicity testing for sediment organisms shall be proposed if the chemical safety assessment according to Annex I indicates the need to investigate further the effects on sediment organisms. LL-lactide is readily biodegradable (see 5.2.1) and will not adsorb to sediment (see 5.4.1). Lactide acid is not toxic to aquatic organisms. Therefore, lack of hazards for sediment organisms is concluded following the principles of the equilibrium-partitioning method.
