Two screening tests results of reliability 2 are available in fish: one limit test by USEPA (in 96h normally) concluding LC50 is > 30 mg/L, and a company study in Leuciscus idus in 48 hours concluding that LC50 is > 1000 mg.L. Both studies are limit test showing no effect at the end of the test. This guarantees with sufficient safety that LC50 96h in fish is > 100 mg/L for not performing a new test in vertebrates. As the acute toxicity level is similar to this observed in Daphnia magna, a chronic test in fish has not been considered necessary.

Two reliability 2 publications and one supporting reliability 2 company study in Daphnia magna are available, and supported by a number of data cited in one of publications.

Only one publication (Marques et al. 2004) and the company study, report for pH controls. The EC50 48h obtained with pH neutralized has therefore been selected for freshwater: 1290 mg/L.

Only one marine water species has been assessed, without precision about pH, but nevertheless selected as reliable result by weight of evidence: 380 mg/L.

The chronic EC50 value reported by the U.S. EPA was between 61 and 68 mg/L (Stuer-Lauridsen et al., 2000) for D. magna, so 61 mg/L is selected as key value.

In a reliability 2 publication, the ecotoxicity of acetylsalicylic acid has been evaluated using a growth test in freshwater algae Desmodesmus subspicatus according to OECD GL 201. The EC50r 72h in algae was 106.7 mg/L and EC10 of 90.6 mg/L. No pH measurements data are available, nor neutralization procedure is described. Therefore the toxicity is probably due to both acidic effect and substance toxicity itself.

Several studies on single microbial species were published. The lowest one, obtained in Bacillus subtilis, was considered as of reliability 2: 360 mg/L.
