Test objective and information
The test covers the determination of the closed cup, flash point temperature of a liquid chemical, in air, at atmospheric pressure. Dependent upon the nature of the test material, there are two procedures for testing.
Procedure A
The sample is heated at a rate of 5 to 6°C per minute with continual stirring at 90 to 120 rpm in a closed cup (volume ca. 100 cm3). A small flame with a diameter of 3.2 to 4.8 mm is directed into the cup containing the sample, at regular intervals, with simultaneous interruption of stirring. The flash point is the lowest temperature at which the application of a flame results in an ignition of the vapour, above the sample. This procedure is applicable to distillate fuels (diesel, biodiesel blends, kerosene, heating oil, turbine fuels), new and in-use lubricating oils, and other homogeneous petroleum liquids not included in the scope of Procedure B.Procedure B
The sample is heated at a rate of 1 to 1.6°C per minute with continual stirring at 250 ±
10 rpm in a closed cup (volume ca. 100 cm3). A small flame with a diameter of 3.2 to
4.8 mm is directed into the cup containing the sample, at regular intervals, with simultaneous interruption of stirring. The flash point is the lowest temperature at which the application of a flame results in an ignition of the vapour, above the sample. This procedure B is applicable to residual fuel oils, cutback residua, used lubricating oils, mixtures of petroleum liquids with solids, petroleum liquids that tend to form a surface film under test conditions, or are petroleum liquids of such kinematic viscosity that they are not uniformly heated under the stirring and heating conditions of Procedure A.The test is conducted in accordance with the procedure described in EU Regulation (EC) 440/2008, Annex Part A test A.9.
Interpretation of results
This test method measures the response of a sample to heat and flame under controlled laboratory conditions. It is only one of a number of properties that must be considered when assessing the overall flammability hazard of a sample.
An abnormally low flash point in a relatively non-volatile or non-flammable material is a good indication of contamination of the sample by highly volatile and flammable materials.
The test regulation ASTM D93 is acceptable for the Classification of flammable liquids (Class 3) under the UN Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations & the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS).
The test standard used states that temperature corrections need to be made to the result if the ambient barometric pressure differs from a standardised (sea level) reading of
101.3kPa. As barometric pressure has an effect on a liquid’s vapour pressure this meansmore or less volatiles could be present at the same test temperature under examination (depending on the local barometric pressure of any given test laboratory) and to remove this variable all results are harmonised to the same barometric pressure.Closed Cup Flash Point Temperature : 212°C (Corrected due to barometric pressure)
