The acute toxicity of the test material, dicerium tricarbonate, to rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) was determined in a 96-hour semi-static test with a daily test medium renewal. The study was conducted according to the EU Commission Directive 92/69/EEC, Part C.1 (1992), and the OECD Guideline for Testing of Chemicals No. 203 (1992).

During the study fish were exposed to control and test material at a loading rate of 100 mg/L for 96 hours. No mortality or other visible abnormalities were observed during the test.

The 96-hour NOELR and the 96-hour LL50 of dicerium tricarbonate to rainbow trout were thus determined to be > 100 mg/L (measured test material concentration of 5.6 µg/L).

In conclusion, the test material dicerium tricarbonate had no acute toxic effects on rainbow trout up to the solubility limit in the test water, at the loading rate of 100 mg/L.

This is the only reliable short-term toxicity study on fish that is available for the substance. It has been performed on a structural analogue, cerium carbonate. The similar toxicological profiles of cerium carbonate and cerium oxalate, along with the structural similarity, mean that this is considered to be an acceptable read-across approach.

The study was performed in line with a recognised OECD guideline and to GLP standard. It is assigned a score of 2 in line with the reliability scoring system of Klimisch et al (1997), based on the fact that a read across approach has been used.
