In the key study (Tremain, 2013a) the flammability (solids) of the test material was investigated in a GLP study which was conducted in accordance with the standardised guideline EU Method A.10. In the preliminary screening test the pile ignited and burnt with a yellow/blue flame which self extinguished 2 minutes 49 seconds after the Bunsen flame was removed without propagating combustion. The test material was therefore determined to be not highly flammable as it did not propagate combustion over the 200 mm within 4 minutes of the preliminary screening test.
In accordance with Section 2 of Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 (REACH) Annex XI, it is considered justified to omit the Flammability (Contact with Water) study and the Flammability (Pyrophoric Properties) study (both further required in Section 7.10) as there is no evidence based on its chemical structure, and experience in handling, that the substance will either spontaneously ignite in air at room temperature or exhibit flammable properties in contact with water.
Justification for classification or non-classification
In accordance with the criteria outlined in Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 (CLP) and Directive 67/548/EEC (DSD), the substance does not meet the criteria for classification as a flammable solid.
