Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Title:
Reduction of Induced Mutability with Xanthine- and Imidazole-derivatives through Inhibition of Metabolic Activation

Materials and methods

Principles of method if other than guideline:
Inhibitory test on mutagenicity: A modified Ames mutation assay was performed using Salmonella typhimurium TA 98 and TA 100 as test strains. Cells were treated with a known mutagen and a sample solution and the mutagenicity was tested by the standard method. The result was compared with a control in which distilled water was used instead of the sample solution.
GLP compliance:
no
Type of method:
in vitro

2-ethyl-4-methyl-1H-imidazole
Details on test material:
Name of test substance (as cited in study report): 2-Ethyl-4-methylimidazol

Test animals

Species:
other: Salmonella typhimurium
Strain:
other: TA 98, TA 100

Administration / exposure

Details on study design:
Cells of Salmonella typhimurium TA 98 or TA 100 were treated at 37°C for 20 min with 0.1 mL of mutagen, with or without 0.25 mL of S-9 mix and 0.1 mL of a sample solution and the mutagenicity was tested by the standard method. The result was compared with a control in which distilled water was used instead of the sample solution.

Results and discussion

Details on results:
In contrast to imidazole and 1-methylimidazole, 2-Ethyl-4-methylimidazole did not lead to a reduction in TRP-P-2, acetylaminofluorene and benzo(a)pyrene induced mutagenicity in Salmonella typhimurium TA100 and TA98.
