Additional information

PCBa was tested for acute aquatic toxicity in D. magna. Water fleas were exposed to nominal PCBa concentrations of 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8, 1.6 and 3.2 mg/l for 48 hours under static conditions.

No immobility was observed in the control samples and up to 1.3 mg/l (measured conc.). 100% immobility was observed in the 3 samples at 2.4 mg/l (measured concentrations). A 48 hours EC50 was calculated by the geometric mean of the highest concentration without effect and the lowest concentrations with 100% immobility leading to a 48-h EC50 of 1.8 mg/l.

Conclusion on classification

On the ground of the results of the acute toxicity to aquatic invertebrates and of the ready biodegradability study, lassification as R51/53 (toxic to aquatic organisms, may cause long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment) under 67/548/EEC and as Aquatic chronic hazard Cat. 2 (H411: Toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects) under Regulation EC 1272/2008 is warranted.
