The biodegradability of polysulfide di-tert-nonyl has been read across from polysulfide di-tert-dodecyl. Feil (2009) is a ready biodegradability manometric respiration test, following OECD guideline 301F. This is a GLP compliant, aerobic, activated sludge study. Polysulfide di-tert-dodecyl is not readily biodegradable, with 0% degradation after 28 days.

Results from an OECD 308 biodegradation study are read across from polysulfides, di-tert-dodecyl. Based on these results, the substance is considered to be persistent but not very persistent.

These substances are polysulfides, characterised by hydrocarbon compounds containing one or more groups of atoms of the element sulphur linked together by covalent bonds. The size and structure of the substances are very similar, and given the similarity in physico-chemical properties, the substances are expected to have similar behaviour in the environment. Therefore, read across between the polysulfides for biodegradation is considered to be justified.
