Endpoint:
water solubility
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
Jan. 2012 to June 2012
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
reference to same study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
other: OECD 111
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
other: OECD107
Principles of method if other than guideline:
In order to undertake a hydrolysis study, water solubility was estimated using the guideline methods of OECD 107. As the substance exhibits surface active properties, an estimation of the solubility in water was made using a visual turbidity method.
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Type of method:
flask method
Remarks:
OECD 107
Water solubility:
ca. 20 mg/L
Temp.:
20 °C
pH:
7
Details on results:
Samples of concentration 10 ppm (mg/L) gave a clear appearance for the time periods of 0 min, 3 min. Concentrations of 30 mg/L were hazy. This indicates that the solubility of OSA is approximately 20 ppm. However, this approach only gives qualitative data.
This was confirmed by EI-GC/MS. Low recovery rates were indicative of rapid hydrolysis.

Conclusions:
Interpretation of results: slightly soluble (0.1-100 mg/L) Solubility is 20 mg/L.
The solubility of octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) was determined using visual observation of turbidity of solutions of various concentrations, as indicated by OECD 107 and 111 guidelines for surface-active substances. Samples of concentration 10 ppm (mg/L) gave a clear appearance, wherease concentrations of 30 mg/L were hazy. This indicates that the solubility of OSA is approximately 20 ppm. This was confirmed by EI-GC/MS. The water solubilty of OSA is approximately 20 mg/L in aqueous buffer pH 7 at 20°C.
Endpoint:
water solubility
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
supporting study
Study period:
Jan. 2012-September 2012
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
reference to same study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
other: OECD 107
Principles of method if other than guideline:
For surface active materials, the OECD guideline 107 states that the Kow must be determined by dividing the n-octanol solubility value by the water solubility value.
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Water solubility:
ca. 20 mg/L
Temp.:
22 °C
pH:

Remarks on result:
other: Concentration verified analytically (by EI-GC/MS) to be 10.44 mg/ml (low due to partial hydrolysis)
Details on results:
Samples of concentrations 5, 10 and 20 ppm (mg/L) gave a clear appearance for the time periods of 0 min and 3 min. The solubility of TPSA is approximately 20 ppm.

Conclusions:
Interpretation of results (migrated information): slightly soluble (0.1-100 mg/L) Solubility is approximately 20 mg/L.
Octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA), which is surface-active and hydrolytically unstable, was tested for water solubility in an aqueous buffer of pH 7, at 22 °C. The solubility of OSA was estimated by visual observation and confirmed analytically to be approximately 20 ppm (mg/L).

Description of key information

Water solubility is approximately 20 mg/l at 20 °C.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Water solubility:
20 mg/L

20 °C

Additional information

The water solubility of octenyl succinic anhydride is approximately 20 mg/l at 20 °C, by visual observation as indicated in OECD 107 and OECD 111.
