First-aid measures

Emergency measure - Inhalation: Immediately move to fresh air. Consult a physician if

irritating symptoms develop and persist.

Emergency measure - Eyes: Rinse eyes thoroughly with running water and consult a

physician if any symptoms persist.

Emergency measure - Skin: Rinse skin immediately with copious amounts of water.

Immediately remove contaminated clothing. Consult a

physician if irritating symptoms develp and persist.

Emergency measure - Ingestion: Consult a physician as soon as possible. Do not induce

vomiting.

Fire-fighting measures

Recommended extinguishing agent: water spray,fog, foam, dry chemical powder, sand, carbon

dioxide.

Product arising from burning: Carbon oxides, nitrogen oxides, hydrochloric acid.

Product determined by test: N

Protective equipment: The on-site fire crews would tackle any localized fire with

a dry powder extinguisher. If a major fire is involved, the

building sprinkler system would automatically activate. The

process drainage system is arranged such that all process

effluent is captured within a catchment pit which prevents

transfer to the site effluent treatment plant (ETP). As

required, the contents of this pit can be transferred to a

holding tank for subsequent analysis and despatch for

incineration. If there is a risk of fume inhalation, the

firemen would wear self contained breathing apparatus and

fire-fighting PPE.

Accidental release measures

Emergency measures in case of spillage: In the event of spillage, the solid material will be

collected in dry form, sealed in a lined drum, labelled and

incinerated. The subsequent water washings are isolated,

analysed and treated in the waste treatment unit or

incinerated depending on concentration.

Liquid spillages would be isolated in catchment pits within

the manufacturing area.

Air-fed hood tested in line with EN141-3, wherever there is

danger from open plant i.e. risk of exposure to an oxygen-

deficient atmosphere (ODA).  If there is no danger from an

ODA, a Tornado powered respirator will be used with filter

tested in line with EN141-3

Storage: The enclosed substance, suitably labelled, will be stored

under cover in a warehouse unit at ambient temperature until

required for use in the production building. Only the

required amount for one batch will be transferred to the

production building at any one time.

Packaging of the substance and or preparation: The solid will be delivered in fibre-board kegs within

polythene liners, 50 kg nett.

Stability and reactivity

Danger other than fire: none known.

Dust explosion: The measures are categorised as follows:

1. Earthing of plant to dissipate static charge.

During open handling of the Fam-stage 1 substance, when the

material is transferred from fibreboard kegs into

intermediate bulk containers (IBC's), the metal IBC will be

earthed to dissipate any static charge within the bulk

material itself as it mounds inside the container.

2. Portion-wise transfer.

The Fam-stage 1 material will be added to the IBC in

portions that are no more than the nett weight (50 kgs),

within each fibreboard keg. This allows any static charge,

built up during the separation process, from keg to IBC, to

relax and dissipate between successive transfers.

3. Intrinsic Safety

There is a residual risk of a brush discharge (type of

static discharge between non conductor and earthed

conductor), at the mouth of the IBC when material is being

transferred into it from the plastic liner within the

fibreboard kegs. However, in addition to the practice of

portionwise transfer, which reduces the probability of

static accumulation, it is known that brush discharges do

not have sufficient energy to ignite combustible dusts.  The

ignition of combustible dusts requires a higher-energy

spark discharge (type of static discharge that occurs

between metal conductors), which cannot occur during the

transfer activity because the IBC is metal and conductive,

but the fibreboard keg liner and its contents are non

conductive.

4. Inerting of plant.

During transfer of the bulk Fam-stage 1 material from IBC's

to the reactor, the plant will be inerted with nitrogen, in

addition to being earthed

Disposal considerations

Industry - Possibility of recovery/recycling: There is no provision for recovery of any materials from the

process.

Industry - Possibility of neutralisation: It is not anticipated that this will apply. Any unwanted

material would be incinerated at a licensed incineration

facility in the UK.

Industry - Possibility of destruction: controlled discharge: All process effluent will be contained, prevented from

entering the environment and will be sent for incineration.
