Registration Dossier

Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets

Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

First-aid measures

Emergency measure - Inhalation: Coated paper: N/A

Coating: No specific treatment is necessary since this

material is unlikely to be hazardous by inhalation.  If

exposed to excessive levels of vapours or mists, remove to

fresh air and get medical attention if cough or other

sumptoms develop.

The substance as free oil: Remove to fresh air.  If not

breathing, give artificial respiration.  Get medical

attention immediately.

Emergency measure - Eyes: Coated paper: N/A

Coating: First check the victim for contact lenses and

remove if present.  Immediately flush eyes with plenty of

water or normal saline for at least 15 minutes while holding

eyelids open.  If symptoms such as redness or irritation

develop or persist, get immediate medical attention.  Do not

put any medication in the victim's eyes unless instructed by

a physician.

The substance as free oil: Irrigate immediately with large

amounts of water for at least 15 minutes.  If irritation

develops or persists, seek medical attention.

Emergency measure - Skin: Coated paper: N/A

Coating: Wash skin with soap and flush thoroughly with

plenty of water.  Obtain medical attention if irritaiton

develops, or other symptoms occur.

Wash clothing before reuse.

The substance as free oil: Take off immediately all

contaminated clothing.  After contact with skin, wash

immediately with plenty of water.  Seek medical attention if

irritation develops or persists.

Emergency measure - Ingestion: Seek immediate medical attention.

Fire-fighting measures

Recommended extinguishing agent: Coating: Carbon dioxide, dry chemical, alcohol foam, or

water spray.

Paper: Water spray.

The substance as free oil: Water fog, carbon dioxide, dry

chemical.

Product arising from burning: Coating: carbon dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, hydrogen

cyanide, and an isocyanate compound

Paper: Carbon dioxide and water

The substance as free oil: carbon monoxide.

Product determined by test: N

Protective equipment: Coating: Emergency equipment including self-contained

breathing apparatus (SCBA) and full fire fighting turnout

gear

Paper: Normal fire-fighting gear.

The substance as free oil: Normal fire-fighting equipment

(full bunker gear) and positive-pressure self-contained

breathing apparatus.

Accidental release measures

Emergency measures in case of spillage: Coated Paper: N/A

Coating: Isolate spill area. When cleaning spills, wear

appropriate personal protective equipment including

splash-proof safety goggles and chemical resistant gloves.

Confine and contain small spills using inert material. Scoop

up absorbed material and place in container for disposal.

In the event of a large spill contain by diking with dry

sand, sorbent booms, or other absorbentmaterial. Prevent

run-off into sewers, storm drains, surface waters, and soil.

Scoop up material for recovery, or, cover withinert

absorbent material, scoop up absorbed material and place in

a container for disposal in acordance with governmental

regulations.

The substance as free oil:

Small spill - absorb spill with an inert material (e.g.

clay, dry sand or earth), and then place in chemical waste

container.

Large spill - contain spilled liquid with sand and earth.

Transfer absorbed waste materials into drums.  Prevent

runoff entering into storm sewers and ditches, which lead to

natural waterways.

Handling and storage

Handling: (1) Coating: Avoid contact with skin and eyes.  Do not

breath vapour or mist.

(2) Precoated paper: Normal handling of ofice supplies.

(3) The substance as free oil for R&D.  S24 (avoid contact

with skin), S27 (take off immediately all contaminated

clothing), S28 (after contact with skin, wash immediately

with plenty of water), S36 (wear suitable protective

clothing), S37 (wear suitable gloves).

Storage: (1) Coating: Keep containers closed when not in use.  Store

in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, away from strong

oxidising agents and strong acids.  To maintain product

quality, keep material from freezing and do not store at

temperature over 38 degrees C.

(2) Precoated Paper: Keep away from extremes of heat of

humidity.

(3) The substance as a free oil.  Store in ventilated area

far from open flames and areas where danger of fire exists.

Packaging of the substance and or preparation: Coating: 200 kg lined drums and 19 litre pails.

The substance as free oil: 200 kg lined drums.

Stability and reactivity

Danger other than fire: Coating: Incompatible with strong oxidizing agents and

strong acids.

The substance as free oil.  Strong oxidizing amterials may

ignite this material.

Chemical reaction with water: None reported.

Dust explosion: Not expected

Dust explosion determined by test: N

Disposal considerations

Industry - Possibility of recovery/recycling: Preconsumer waste paper is recycled at pulp and paper mills.

Industry - Possibility of destruction - other: For use of the substance at commercial mills for R&D work,

the mills will not land apply waste water treatment sludges

containing the solvent pending the review of the risk

assessment by the UK competent authority.

Public at large - Possibility of recovery/recycling: 50% recovery rate for post consumer use carbonless copy

paper.

Public at large - Possibility of destruction - water purification: 99% of the solvent removed in waste water treatment.
