Emergency measure - Inhalation: Symptomatic treatment.

Emergency measure - Eyes: Rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical

help.

Emergency measure - Skin: Wash with soap and water.

Emergency measure - Ingestion: Drink water or milk and seek medical attention.

Fire-fighting measures

Recommended extinguishing agent: Water, carbon dioxide, foam and dry powder are suitable

extinguishers.

Product arising from burning: Combustion products may contain carbon and nitrogen oxides.

Accidental release measures

Emergency measures in case of spillage: The substance will be transported, stored and handled as an

aqueous solution. In case of leaks, contain and recover the

spillage. If this is unsuccessful, it should be washed away

thoroughly with water.

Handling and storage

Handling: Wear eye protection

Storage: Store in a closed container made of an alkali resistant

material (eg stainless steel, plastic, PVC). Contact with a

chelating agent (eg zinc, tin, aluminium etc.) should be

avoided.

Stability and reactivity

Danger other than fire: DIDA is normally imported as a 47% aqueous solution and as

such has a pH of 12.5.

Chemical reaction with water: None reported.

Disposal considerations

Industry - Possibility of recovery/recycling: DIDA may be recovered from aqueous solutions by using

ethanol as a precipitating medium.

Industry - Possibility of neutralisation: The aqueous solution of DIDA can be neutralised using

mineral acid.

Industry - Possibility of destruction: controlled discharge: The substance can be discharged diluted in waste water but

large volumes should not be discharged to sewage treatment

plants or surface waters as the substance does not

biodegrade and mobilisation of metals in sediments may

occur.

Industry - Possibility of destruction - incineration: Following evaporation to remove water, DIDA may be

incinerated in a suitable incinerator.

Industry - Possibility of destruction - water purification: The substance is non-biodegradable and will not be removed

by conventional sewage treatment. High concentrations will

keep metals in solution or mobilise deposited metals.

Public at large - Possibility of recovery/recycling: Recovery from the final product is not possible.

Public at large - Possibility of neutralisation: The substance is partially neutralised in the product

formulation.

Public at large - Possibility of destruction: controlled discharge: Formulations containing the substance may be safely wasted

through domestic sewers.

Public at large - Possibility of destruction - incineration: Not applicable for the public at large.

Public at large - Possibility of destruction - water purification: The substance will not be removed in municipal sewage

treatment processes nor will it have any effect on metal

remobilisation from sludges or river sediments.
