Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Parameter:
sensitiveness to impact: impact energy (J)
Remarks on result:

Parameter:
sensitiveness to friction: friction load (N)
Remarks on result:
negative (not further specified)
Parameter:
other: Explosive (not specified)
Remarks on result:
negative (not further specified)
Remarks:
No explosion was observed.

The test item contains a residual moisture of 0.2 wt-% which was determined by drying the test item under reduced pressure (approximately 100 mbar) at a temperature of 50 °C.

Thermal stability:

The decomposition energy of sodium dithionite in the DSC was > 500 J/g, therefore the main test had to be performed.

Explosive properties

Mechanical sensitivity: Friction

No explosion was observed within 6 tests using a 360 N loading.

Mechanical sensitivity: Impact

No explosion was observed within 6 testsdropping the 10 kg mass from 0.40 m (40 J).

Thermal sensitivity: Koenen-Test

Due to the fact that the test series with a 2.0 mm diameter orifice plate showed no explosion, the fact that the area of a 6.0 mm orifice is an order of magnitude higher and the physical state of the test item (solid) which excludes an enrichment of test item due to the evaporation of solvent an explosion can also be excluded for the 6.0 mm diameter orifice plate.

Interpretation of results:
non explosive
Conclusions:
The decomposition energy of sodium dithionite in the DSC was > 500 J/g, therefore the main test had to be performed.
The test item has no explosive properties according to EC 440/2008, Part a, A.14..

Description of key information

Explosive properties of sodium dithionite (experimental results, according to EC 440/2008, Part A, A.14): non explosive substance

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Explosiveness:
non explosive

Additional information

For evaluation of this endpoint, data from an experimental study are used as key information. The study was conducted according to GLP and according to EU method A.14. Therefore, the test data are reliable without restrictions.

The decomposition energy of sodium dithionite in the DSC analysis was > 500 J/g, therefore the main test had to be performed. Results from the main test indicate that the test item has no explosive properties according to EC 440/2008, Part a, A.14..

Justification for classification or non-classification

The test item had no explosive properties according to EC 440/2008, Part A, A.14. Therefore the substance does not require classification as explosive according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.
