A number of biodegradation screening studies have been carried out using both adapted and unadapted innoculii and in both fresh and saltwater. There is sufficient information available to conclude that methoxyethanol is readily biodegradable and that primary degradation is very rapid. There is limited data available for saltwater which, whilst not conclusive, suggests that methoxyethanol may not fulfill the criteria for ready biodegradability with non-adapted innoculum. However, methoxyethanol is readily biodegradable under all conditions in freshwater environments and in WWTPs. For this reason, there is no requirement to generate biodegradation data in water and sediment by simulation testing nor in soil.

From experimental and calculated data, the half life for decomposition of methoxyethanol is 0.6 to 0.9 days, i.e phototransformation in the atmosphere is quite rapid. The molecular structure of methoxyethanol indicates that it is likely to be resistant to hydrolysis under environmental conditions, although this is not relevant as the molecule is readily biodegradable. There is no data available on phototransformation in water or soil.

Methoxyethanol has a low potential for bioaccumulation or adsorption based on the low intrinsic log Kow value. For this reason, it is not necessary to generate specific bioaccumulation or adsorption/desorption data.
