Description of key information

Key values were obtained via a weight of evidence approach since the only available study report was insufficiently documented to allow proper assessment of the data. QSAR predictions were thus obtained from the ECOSAR v1.00 (2009) tool, which can be considered reliable. The outcome of the predictions was validated against the five OECD principles.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
0.696 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
0.32 mg/L

Additional information

Results reported from the unreliable study indicate EC50(96h) values of 90 mg/l and 120 mg/L, based on measurements of chlorophyll a (in vivo) and cell count respectively. These values are far above the water solubility of 0.0568 mg/L and are thus not included in the weight of evidence approach.

Non-testing data could be obtained from the latest version of ECOSAR (v1.00, 2009) using input values of 5.24 for log Kow and 0.0568 mg/L for water solubility. The predictions from this tool were considered reliable when based on the neutral organic compound group but not when based on the polyphenol group. The toxicity values for algae obtained from estimates in the neutral organic compound group were considered as key values for the chemical safety assessment. The chronic value given (ChV), 0.455 mg/L, represents the geometric mean of NOEC and LOEC. An NOEC of 0.32 mg/L was derived from this with the assumption that adjacent test concentrations are spaced by a maximum factor of 2.
