Description of key information

The key value for the acute toxicity to fish was derived from a study performed according to the EPA guideline Ecol. Res. Series 660/3-75-009 (Methods for acute toxicity tests with fish, macroinvertebrates and amphibians, 1975). An LC50 value of 0.36 mg/L was found for fathead minnow (P. promelas) after an exposure of 96 hours in a static test.

Multiple 96-h LC50 values were available for different fish species and varied from 0.13 mg/L for rainbow trout to 0.51 mg/L for bluegill. Both extremes of this range originate from the same study (EG&G Bionomics, 1977, BN-76 -264) which was found unreliable due to insufficient documentation of the test design. This rationale also accounts for the results obtained from an almost identical study (EG&G Bionomics, 1977, BN-76-265), but performed with Santonox R crystals in stead of Santowhite crystals. The only reliable study provided an LC50 value equal to 0.36 mg/L, for fathead minnow. Although this result is slightly less protective compared to the most sensitive outcome, the LC50 of 0.36 mg/L was selected as key value because the study was performed according to GLP and an internationally accepted guideline and nicely falls within the range of observed values.
